WordPress is the world's most widely used content management system, powering a large share of all websites. Written in PHP and backed by a MySQL or MariaDB database, it lets you publish blogs, marketing sites, portfolios, and full web applications through a browser-based admin dashboard, with no coding required for everyday content work.

Its defining strength is extensibility: tens of thousands of themes control the look of a site while plugins add capabilities such as SEO, contact forms, membership systems, caching, and e-commerce (notably via WooCommerce). The block-based Gutenberg editor provides a visual, drag-and-drop authoring experience, and built-in roles and permissions support multi-author teams.

Typical self-hosted use is running a personal or business website where you want full control over data, themes, and plugins rather than a hosted SaaS. A small instance needs a PHP runtime, a web server, and a MySQL/MariaDB database; comfortable operation generally calls for around 1GB of RAM once PHP and the database are running together.
